For most of us, doing an initial drawing is the hardest part of creating a watercolor or pastel painting. But, here's an easy way to use a photo instead of a pencil sketch as the first step to a beautiful painting.

Put that pencil down. Use your camera to create the perfect preliminary sketch for your next watercolor or pastel painting.

Here's what to do:

1. Visit and upload your photo.

2. Under the "Basic" menu, edit and improve your photo as needed. Crop it, straighten it or whatever. Then, Sharpen it it to 40 on Ribbet's "Sharpness" slider.

3. Click on the "Effects" menu and scroll down until you find the "Pencil Drawing" effect.  Set the "Radius" to 1.3 and the "Strength" to 200. Click on the "Apply" button.

4. Go back to the "Basic" menu and find the "Exposure" section. Play with the "Contrast" slider until you have an image with just a hint of shading.

Print the image on good quality smooth-texture watercolor paper and paint away!

Because you can create photo sketches quickly and print them as often as you'd like, you can concentrate of the fun part of painting. Try different photos, different colors and different techniques until you've created your masterpiece.
